Terms of use
These terms apply to your use of Checkmate Patterns (https://www.checkmate-patterns.com), a free website for learning and practising chess checkmate patterns. The site is run by FcoG, as a private, non-commercial project (“we”, “us”). By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
1. The service
The site is free to use and doesn’t require an account. We provide it as it is and as it is available. We may change, suspend or stop the site, or any part of it, at any time and without notice. We don’t guarantee that the site will always be available, error-free or secure.
2. Educational content
The puzzles, explanations and historical notes are provided for education and entertainment. We take care to make them accurate, and every puzzle is checked automatically, but we can’t guarantee that all content is complete, correct or up to date. Your progress is stored only in your own browser; we can’t restore it if it is lost.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the site in a way that breaks the law or the rights of others;
- try to gain unauthorised access to the site or its systems, or disrupt, overload or damage them;
- copy or scrape the site’s content on a large scale by automated means, or republish it as your own;
- use the site to spread malware or spam.
Normal indexing by search engines is welcome.
4. Intellectual property
The texts, explanations, design and logo of this site are protected by copyright and belong to us, unless stated otherwise. You may share links to the site and use the content for personal, non-commercial study. Chess positions, moves and the historical names of checkmate patterns are common knowledge and are not claimed by us.
The site uses open-source software, including chessground (GPL-3.0) and chess.js (BSD-2-Clause). These are used under their own licences, which also apply to them.
5. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damage resulting from the use of the site, from the site being unavailable, or from errors in its content. This limitation does not apply to damage caused by our intent or deliberate recklessness (opzet of bewuste roekeloosheid), or where Dutch or EU law does not allow liability to be limited.
If you use the site as a consumer, these terms do not affect the rights you have under mandatory consumer protection law.
6. Links to other websites
The site may link to other websites. We don’t control them and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices.
7. Privacy
How we handle personal data is explained in our privacy policy.
8. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they were last changed. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply.
9. Applicable law and disputes
These terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes will be submitted to the competent court in The Netherlands. If you are a consumer living in another EU country, you also keep the protection of the mandatory law of your own country and may bring a claim before the courts there. Before going to court, please contact us first — we would much rather solve any problem together.
